John Barnet Basket Hilt Sword Museum Quality

The basket-hilted broadsword, in its various forms, was well known throughout Europe from the 1500s onwards. Its distinctive guard reflects the development of ornate metalwork during the period. In Scotland from the mid-17th century, the basket hilt became a popular replacement for the large two-handed claymore. Many Scottish basket hilts feature well-formed steel guards with decorative openwork, while period examples commonly incorporated well-tempered imported German blades and wooden grips covered in shark skin.
