Most early versions of the Roman gladius were wasp-waisted with a long point that combined cutting and thrusting performance. Some later variants had a straighter blade while retaining a long point; even later patterns (such as the Pompeii) were not waisted and had a shorter point, remaining effective and simpler to produce. Both styles were used alongside one another for many years, and it was common for fourth-century legionaries to carry either model. The Roman Maintz Sword by Legacy Arms features a high-carbon blade, a hardwood handle and a high-polished steel spacer at the base of the handle for strength and durability. The sword includes a wooden scabbard wrapped in black leather with steel accents at the throat and tip.
