Museum Late 17th Century English Short Sword With Scabbard

This museum-quality replica of a late 17th-century English ceremonial short sword is made by John Barnett as a collectible piece for historical display only. Its hand-forged blade is made from EN45 spring steel, providing resilience and spring-like flexibility. The small sword is thought to have originated at the court of Louis XIV of France, where its lighter, more compact form offered a convenient alternative to the rapier. Following the Restoration of Charles II, the design appeared in England and became part of the period dress worn by gentlemen. Over the following century, small swords developed with a variety of blade styles, hilts and decorative methods. A typical example featured a small pommel, slim grip, shell guard, knuckle bow and finger rings above the guard. Blades were commonly narrow, double-edged or triangular in section, with hollow-ground construction valued for its combination of strength and lightness.
