This is a John Barnett designed Museum-Quality Replica Pappenheimer Rapier, the rapier became the preferred choice for the civilian gentry but the military never fully adopted it except as a dress sword. However, it was obvious the hand protection of the new sword afforded was something that would be useful. Since armour was in decline at this point, blades could be slimmer so sword designers created a new idea, a rapier style guard with a blade somewhere between a rapier and a cutting sword. The Pappenheimer Rapier was the choice of many, it was light, flexible, capable of both cut and point work and yet not too heavy for good point work.
